Help towards AI, in Scotland.

Most of the help a Scottish business can get towards AI comes as free courses, expert time and advice, rather than cash. Here is what is open, who runs it, what it asks of you, and what has closed, checked against each scheme’s own page.

Checked 19 October 2026 21 schemes open or opening soon 10 closed, full or not for Edinburgh 41 sources

In the Scottish Government’s business survey published on 9 October 2026, 36.9% of businesses with ten or more staff said they used some form of AI.41 These schemes are run by the organisations named, not by us.

Before you apply, five things.

The long read, with what each scheme expects of you: paying for an AI project in Scotland.

  1. 1

    Write the problem down

One paragraph: what takes too long or goes wrong, who it affects, and how you would know it had improved.

  2. 2

    Check your data

Where it lives, who owns it, and what you are allowed to do with it. The expert-time schemes ask for data in order.

  3. 3

    Name an owner

Someone with time to work with the experts. Free support still costs your own people’s hours.

  4. 4

    Do not start too early

A grant may not fund work already under way: Scottish Enterprise’s R&D grant, for one, cannot.

  5. 5

    Keep records

Of time and costs, from the first day, if R&D tax relief might apply.

Questions, answered.

Not sure which fits? A free 30-minute AI health check

Are there AI grants for small businesses in Edinburgh?

Not with a published amount. The national AI Adoption Programme mentions grant funding, but its grant sizes are only published for the South of Scotland. Most help in Edinburgh comes as free courses, advice and expert time; the money that is published comes through Interface’s innovation vouchers (£1,000 to £7,500 matched in kind, or up to £20,000 matched in cash and kind), and, for genuine R&D, tax relief.

Is there free AI training for businesses in Scotland?

Yes. The Data Lab’s Introduction to Data and AI for SME Leaders and its From Foundation to Implementation course are fully funded by the Scottish Government, Business Gateway runs free webinars, and the New Flexible Workforce Development Fund pays for college training for eligible staff.

Does buying an AI tool count for R&D tax relief?

No. R&D tax relief is for work that seeks an advance in science or technology. Buying, configuring or rolling out an off-the-shelf AI tool does not qualify; resolving a genuine technical unknown might. Talk to an accountant who knows R&D claims.

Which of these is right for my business?

Start with what you have: just curious, a job in mind, or a project ready to go. If you would like a second opinion on which fits a job you have in mind, that is what our free 30-minute AI health check is for.
