Using this site

What the pages here are, and are not, and what you can rely on us to do about them.

General information, not advice

The field notes, the industry pages and the free tools are general information, written to help a small firm think a decision through. Where a page touches law, tax, regulation or a standard, it says so, and says that it is not advice for your situation. Check anything important against the source the page names, or with someone qualified to advise you, before you rely on it.

Every figure has a source and a date

Each figure names who published it, how much weight it carries, and the day it was read. Each source also has a date it is due to be read again, which depends on how fast that kind of figure changes, and the site refuses to build once one is more than 30 days overdue. There are 485 sources on the register today.

When a figure is wrong

It is corrected on the page and added to the register, with what was wrong and when. It is not deleted quietly: 31 figures have been struck or corrected so far, and every one is still listed. If you find one that has gone stale, tell us.

The free tools

The tools run in your browser and send nothing. Each shows its working or its reasons, so you can check how it got there. A tool’s answer is only as good as the numbers you give it.

The record

The records on the record page are illustrations, replayed from fixtures, and say so on their face: the names, times and case numbers are invented. The six fields are the ones every real record carries.

Quoting this site

You are welcome to quote a note or a figure with a link to the page it came from. Every note has a ready-made citation, and every source and every correction has an address of its own. The figures belong to the sources named beside them, and their own terms apply to their material.
